Cadiz City said it condoled with the family and loved ones of maestro Gilopez Kabayao, 94, a distinguished Cadiznon virtuoso violinist and Cadizeño awardee in Performing Arts.

“The city government and the people of Cadiz extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Maestro Gilopez. Rest in peace, Maestro,” the LGU said in a post Oct. 13.

Kabayao was among the recipients of the Cadizeños Awards 2024 of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental in June.

“The purpose of creating an audience for culture and the arts that would support the future Filipino artists has gained momentum. With this, I deeply appreciate this once-in-a-lifetime award,” Kabayao had said in his message, read by a family representative, at the awarding ceremony.

“My heart is forever grateful and will forever sing melodies for this felicitation,” the world-renowned violinist, who was born and grew up in Cadiz, added in a Philippine News Agency report.

Kabayao, a nominee for National Artist for Music, passed away after a brief illness in Iloilo City Oct. 12.

His wife, Corazon, said in a post Oct 12 that “the precious legacy of the Philippines’ violin virtuoso and musical crusader, Gilopez Kabayao, has inspired thousands to love and appreciate beautiful Filipino and classical music, and his virtuosity on the violin has brought singular honor and prestige to the Philippines.”

“After more than seven decades of sharing his music, propelled by the generosity of spirit that he so selflessly gave to his audience from all walks of life, the curtain now closes on this artist with a mission,” the post said.

Kabayao is survived by Corazon, his children Sicilienne, Farida, and Gilberto, sister Marcelita Kabayao Mortensen, a grandchild, nephews, and nieces, and nephews.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in a post Oct. 13, said that Kabayao’s “remarkable talent and lifelong dedication to music have inspired countless Filipinos and enriched our cultural heritage.”

As the first Filipino violinist to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York in 1950, Gilopez Kabayao broke new ground and brought pride to the nation, the CCP said.

He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1972, which underscored his commitment to being a true artist for the Filipino people, as he brought the beauty of classical music to communities across the country in unconventional venues, breaking down barriers, and inspiring a love for the arts.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to music, he was awarded the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 2008, alongside Corazon Pineda Kabayao.

“He leaves behind a legacy of artistic excellence that will continue to resonate in the hearts of many,” the CCP added. ||
