Faster and safer internet access could soon be standard in every new or rehabilitated office, and commercial building in Bacolod City.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved on first reading a proposed ordinance filed by Councilor Caesar Distrito that will make it mandatory for all new buildings, and those undergoing major renovations to include conduits for internet, or network cabling, in their design.
Atty. Distrito said the measure recognizes internet as an essential utility for education, business, and communication.
“Like electricity and water, internet connectivity is now a necessity. By requiring standardized conduits, we make sure Bacolod is ready for the future, safer cabling, better service, and easier upgrades,” he explained in a press release Sept. 5.
“Bacolod is moving to future-proof its infrastructure that will require all new and renovated offices, and commercial spaces, to be built internet-ready through the installation of standardized conduits for cabling, ensuring faster, safer, and more reliable connections while reducing messy wiring and preparing the city for the demands of a digital future,” he added.
Under the proposed ordinance, violators may face a fine of P2,000 to P5,000, imprisonment of one to six months, or both, at the discretion of the court.
Distrito said the ordinance will reduce the cost of retrofitting, prevent messy and hazardous cabling, and ensure that Bacolod keeps pace with modern digital infrastructure.
The proposal will undergo further committee deliberations before its final approval. ||
