Governors Eugenio Jose Lacson of Negros Occidental and Chaco Sagarbarria of Negros Oriental have suspended classes today, Oct. 5, at all levels, for national and world teachers’ day observance.
In Executive Order 26-27 issued Oct. 4, Lacson said the class suspension is for public schools across Negros Occidental, although several mayors then issued advisories that private schools are also included in the suspension in their respective areas.
Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya has yet to issue any advisory on the matter, as of 9 p.m. Oct. 4.
In Negros Oriental, Sagarbarria ordered the suspension at all levels, both in public and private schools, in the province.
“There is a need to afford learners, teachers, and school personnel throughout the province of Negros Oriental sufficient time and opportunity to meaningfully observe National Teachers’ Day and World Teachers’ Day,” he added.
Sagarbarria said the provincial government recognizes the dedication, commitment, and invaluable service of teachers, school heads, teaching personnel, and non-teaching personnel in educating and shaping the minds, character, and future of the youth of Negros Oriental.
The Department of Education, meanwhile, said that although some local government units have announced the suspension of classes in their areas for Oct. 5, the government has not declared a nationwide class suspension.
It also noted false information circulating on social media about a nationwide suspension of classes on Oct. 5 and 6. “Be cautious of information you see online. Avoid following or sharing pages that spread false information and report them.”
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) also warned the public against a fabricated graphic circulating online on the alleged suspension of classes. “The PCO has issued no such announcement. The public is advised to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely only on announcements from official government sources.” | CGC
