The Philippine National Police (PNP) posthumously honored PMaster Sgt. Fernando Marfa Jr. by presenting a Medalya ng Kadakilaan to his wife during a visit to his wake on Aug. 10 in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
Marfa died while saving Bantay Dagat members, who were swept away by strong current while crossing a river in Sitio Bisong in Barangay Luna on Aug. 7.
The medal was presented to Marfa’s wife by PCol. Dennis Wenceslao, provincial director of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, as a symbol of the PNP’s recognition of his courage and selfless act of saving others at the cost of his own life.
Wenceslao led the reading and awarding of the medal in recognition of Marfa’s heroism, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Marfa, who was assigned to the Cadiz Component City Police Station, was conducting a seaborne patrol with members of the Bantay Dagat during the fateful day.
Police investigation showed Marfa went to the aid of the two team members but was himself overpowered by the current and submerged. He was later declared dead on arrival at the Cadiz District Hospital.
The PNP described Marfa’s final act as a reflection of the highest traditions of police service, highlighting his willingness to put the safety of his companions ahead of his own.
The awarding of the Medalya ng Kadakilaan served not only as a tribute to Marfa’s bravery, but also as a reminder of the sacrifice shared by his family throughout his years of service, the PNP said.
On behalf of PBrig. Gen. Romano Cardiño, regional director of Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region, Wenceslao also extended financial assistance to the bereaved family.
The National Police Commission has assured the family of Marfa of assistance in processing and securing the benefits due to his beneficiaries. | GPB
