Officials of Foundation University embarked on an academic mission to China, reaffirming the university’s commitment to global engagement. The delegation was composed of Victor Vicente “Dean” Sinco, university president; Charlotte Cariño, university chancellor; Lucelle Saguban, vice-chancellor for administration; and Anna Carla Merto, internationalization coordinator.
The delegation sought to strengthen international partnerships and explore new opportunities for academic collaboration, paving the way for expanded programs in research, culture, and faculty and student mobility between Foundation University and its partner institution, Guangdong Industry Polytechnic University (GDIPU) in China.
One of the highlights of the visit, which was facilitated by Joanne Huang, a faculty member of GDIPU who visited Foundation University and taught Marketing courses for one month last year, was the Creative Department, where the delegation observed a wide range of innovative student-designed products and projects. Particular attention was given to the university’s Industrial Design Program, which emphasizes creativity, product development, and industry collaboration. A notable example was the partnership with JISULIFE, a company recognized for its portable electric fans.
The delegation further visited several academic units, including the School of Economics and Management under the leadership of Dean Lu Yingjie, the School of Life and House headed by Dean Zhen Aifang, and the School of Intelligence Manufacturing led by Dean Yuan Zhengou, where the delegation explored advanced laboratories, intelligent manufacturing facilities, and industry-oriented training programs designed to prepare students for emerging technologies and modern industrial practices.
The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment of both universities to the successful implementation of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Marketing Management program, particularly through the integration of e-commerce courses.
Another highlight of the visit was the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Foundation University and Guangdong Polytechnic of Science and Trade. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in areas such as student exchanges, faculty exchanges, scientific and academic collaboration, cooperative education programs, and other mutually beneficial initiatives.
The delegation toured several academic facilities, including the university’s Language School. One of the most innovative practices observed was the integration of live-selling activities into the students’ learning experience. Students actively promoted products through online live-streaming platforms as part of their practical training. Through partnerships with industry collaborators, participating students not only gained valuable hands-on experience in digital marketing, communication, and e-commerce, but also received compensation from the companies whose products they promoted. This model effectively bridges classroom learning with real-world industry applications while providing students with opportunities to develop professional skills and earn income.
The delegation was impressed by GPST’s strong emphasis on experiential learning, industry engagement, and the practical application of knowledge. Discussions during the visit focused on potential collaborative activities that could be pursued under the newly signed MOU, including student and faculty mobility programs, joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and cooperative educational projects.
A visit was also conducted to Guangdong Engineering Polytechnic (GDEP). The visit provided valuable insights into the institution’s specialized programs, industry-oriented training, and innovative approaches to technical and engineering education.
The delegation explored several academic facilities and laboratories, particularly those related to Elevator Engineering Technology and Intelligent Engineering. Faculty members and university representatives showcased the institution’s advanced training facilities designed to equip students with practical skills and industry-relevant competencies.
A notable feature of Guangdong Engineering Polytechnic’s educational model is its strong collaboration with industry partners. Through these partnerships, students are provided with opportunities to gain practical experience and exposure to actual workplace environments, ensuring that classroom instruction is closely aligned with industry needs and technological advancements.
The visit to Guangdong Engineering Polytechnic highlighted the institution’s commitment to industry-driven education, technological innovation, and workforce development. It also opened opportunities for future collaboration between Guangdong Engineering Polytechnic and Foundation University, particularly in the areas of technical education, professional development, international immersion programs, and industry-engaged learning.
In addition to the Guangzhou Campus, the delegation also visited the Qingyuan Campus of Guangdong Polytechnic of Science and Trade. The visit provided a broader perspective on the university’s diverse academic offerings and specialized training facilities.
At the School of Architecture, the delegation explored the institution’s approach to architectural education, which emphasizes design innovation, technical competence, and practical applications. Faculty members showcased student projects and highlighted the integration of modern technologies and sustainable design principles into the curriculum.
The delegation also visited the Agriculture School, where they were introduced to the university’s programs and facilities supporting agricultural education, research, and innovation.
Another highlight of the visit was the Tea Art School, a unique academic unit dedicated to preserving and promoting China’s rich tea culture and traditions. The delegation learned about the history, cultivation, processing, evaluation, and ceremonial aspects of tea production. Faculty members demonstrated how the program combines cultural heritage, entrepreneurship, tourism, and business opportunities, providing students with both technical knowledge and practical skills related to the tea industry.
The visit to the Qingyuan Campus showcased Guangdong Polytechnic of Science and Trade’s commitment to offering specialized and industry-responsive programs across diverse disciplines. It also provided valuable insights into potential areas for future collaboration between Foundation University and GPST, particularly in architecture, agriculture, cultural studies, research, and experiential learning initiatives.
The delegation also visited Guangdong Maritime University (GMU) as part of its continuing efforts to establish strategic international partnerships and explore opportunities for academic collaboration. The visit provided an avenue for meaningful discussions on future academic programs, student mobility initiatives, and curriculum development between the two institutions.
Discussions centered on the potential establishment of a formal partnership between Guangdong Maritime University and Foundation University through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which is currently being drafted by Foundation University for review and consideration by both institutions.
One of the key areas of interest identified during the meeting was language education. Guangdong Maritime University expressed its willingness to offer Mandarin language programs for Foundation University students, providing opportunities for language acquisition, cultural immersion, and enhanced global competencies. Such programs would enable students to develop valuable communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and business practices.
In addition, Foundation University presented opportunities for Guangdong Maritime University students and faculty to participate in short-term academic and professional development programs that may be offered by Foundation University. These short courses are envisioned to promote cross-cultural learning, knowledge exchange, and international engagement among participants from both institutions.
The discussions further explored the possibility of developing joint curriculum initiatives, particularly in the fields of Economics and Accounting.
The delegation was accompanied and warmly welcomed by representatives of Surelead, Foundation University’s partner organization in China, which facilitated and coordinated the university visits and partnership engagements throughout the trip. Representing Surelead were Felix Chen and Sandy Wong, whose assistance and coordination were instrumental in connecting Foundation University with various higher education institutions in China and in facilitating discussions on potential academic collaborations and internationalization initiatives.
The delegation was warmly received by university officials led by Yang Xinbin, president of GDIPU; Liao Zhiching, vice-president; together with the deans and representatives of various academic schools and departments, including Lu Yingjie, Zhen Aifang, Yuan Zhengou, and Ms. Bonnie Li.
“Overall, the visit served as an important step toward expanding the internationalization efforts of Foundation University and GDIPU, and fostering mutually beneficial partnerships for years to come,” expressed university president Dean Sinco. | NWI
