Despite continuing rise in ash emissions in the past three days, Kanlaon Volcano activities remain consistent with Alert Level 2, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs logged a total of 31 ash emission events from June 15 to 17, with numerous tremors lasting for 212 minutes, indicating ongoing movement of volcanic fluids and gases beneath the volcano.
Kanlaon resident volcanologist Mary Andylene Quintia said on Wednesday, June 17 the volcano currently behaves as an “open system,” allowing volcanic gases to escape continuously through degassing, and gas releases are accompanied by ash emissions.
Quintia said an open volcanic system is generally preferable because it reduces the buildup of pressure beneath the volcano.
When volcanic conduits become plugged, pressure can accumulate and potentially trigger more explosive eruptions, she added.
During an ashfall survey conducted in Sitio Guintubdan, Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City, survey teams noted very thin ash fall in the area, which dissipated quickly.
Quintia also reported that no water contamination has been reported in local water systems. | GPB
