Deputy Speaker and Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has ruled out the filing of counter charges against radio blocktime anchorman Roger Ledesma, who filed charges against him before the Office of the Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman dismissed the complaints filed against Benitez and the members of the City Council for alleged grave misconduct, violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, and the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards, citing lack of sufficient and substantial evidence.
The lawmaker said “the issues raised have already been thoroughly addressed, and the Ombudsman’s ruling has affirmed that there was no basis for the allegations”.
“For me, that is more than enough. The dismissal of all cases stands as our full vindication,” Benitez said.
He said engaging in further legal action at this point would serve no meaningful purpose, adding that it would only consume time and resources, which is better devoted to public service.
“We choose to move forward, guided by the truth that has now been clearly established, and to continue focusing on our work for the people,” Benitez said.
Ledesma alleged that Benitez, then mayor of Bacolod City, and the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod overpriced the acquisition of 74.7 hectares of agricultural land in Barangay Granada, citing supposed conflicts of interest among officials, and questioned the transfer of titles without clearances from the Department of Agrarian Reform.
The Ombudsman ruled that there was no definite proof of overpricing, noting that the valuation was based on approved zonal values and proper appraisal procedures, considering the property’s location, accessibility, infrastructure, and development potential. | GB
