Electric vehicles (EVs) should be prioritized in future vehicle acquisitions of the Bacolod City government to reduce fuel expenditures, promote energy efficiency, and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said March 18.

The SP approved the resolution authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito, which urged the adoption of a policy prioritizing the procurement of EVs in future vehicle acquisitions of the city for energy efficiency and reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

“Prioritizing the procurement of electric vehicles in government operations can serve as model for environmentally-responsible governance and encourage broader adoption of sustainable transportation within the community,” Distrito said.

He added that incorporating EVs in government fleets “contributes to national and global efforts to transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.”

The SP also lauded the initiative of Mayor Greg Gasataya of purchasing EVs for each of the 10 police stations in Bacolod, to save on fuel expenses. “(The procurement of) electric vehicles for use in police stations demonstrates a forward-looking approach toward modernizing government operations while promoting energy-efficient transportation.”

Gasataya earlier said the city allocated P14 million for the 10 EVs for the police, adding the City Planning and Development Office, Office of the Building Official, and the Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office are also planning to buy EVs.

“Electric vehicles offer significant advantages, including lower operating and maintenance costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased reliance on imported petroleum products,” the SP stressed.
