The San Carlos City Public Library celebrated the 67th Public Library Day on the theme “Public Libraries in Action: Blueprint of an Empowered Community”, March 9, at San Jose Elementary School.
As part of the celebration, city librarian Stella Fetiluna led the turnover of around 346 books to the school, which were received by principal Melvin Espinosa, to support the rehabilitation of the school’s library that was damaged during past storms.
Fetiluna said the celebration honors the existence of public libraries and their vital role in shaping skilled and empowered communities.
She added that a library is more than just a building filled with books, but an active center of learning, innovation, and opportunity that provides access to knowledge, promotes digital literacy, and offers a safe space where ideas can grow.
San Carlos City Children and Women’s Affairs Inc. president, Ma. Consuelo Janice Carmona, also said that with the increasing number of children experiencing low reading comprehension, libraries play an important role in helping young learners strengthen their reading skills and developing a love for books, noting that reading and knowledge are essential in building a nation and strengthening communities.
The San Carlos City Council for Youth Affairs, headed by youth development officer I Renzie Mae Antonio, also distributed lunchboxes, tumblers, raincoats, and hygiene kits to the students, while a storytelling session was conducted in their classrooms.
Antonio said in a city press release that she was happy with their collaboration with the city library, as it allows them to extend learning opportunities to schools located far from the city proper.
Espinosa thanked the city government, headed by Mayor Renato Gustilo and Vice Mayor Cristopher Paul Carmona, as well as the City Public Library and SCCCYA for their support to the school. ||
