More than 10,000 delegates and visitors witnessed vibrant performances in the inaugural Negros Island Regional Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) opening ceremony at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City March 1.

Mayor Greg Gasataya welcomed the 12 delegations from the municipalities and cities of Siquijor, Bais, Guihulngan, Tanjay, Bayawan, Canlaon, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Kabankalan, Silay, Negros Occidental, and host city Bacolod City to the historic regional sports gathering.

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson echoed the mayor’s sentiments, reminding athletes that the meet serves as a crucial opportunity to prove themselves and earn a spot to represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa.

Department of Education Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera, meanwhile, emphasized the value of athletics in youth development.

“Sports keep our youth disciplined and resilient. You have earned your place here, it was not by accident,” Corvera stressed.

The opening ceremony drew in mayors and governors from the 12 participating local government units, underscoring strong regional unity and support for grassroots sports, the city said.

Spectators were treated to dynamic performances from the iconic MassKara dancers, as well as captivating field demonstrations by the Handumanan National High School and Domingo Lacson National High School.

The celebration was capped off by spectacular fireworks display that lit up the Bacolod night sky.

The weeklong regional sports competition features 27 sporting events and runs until March 7, highlighting athletic excellence, camaraderie, and the shared aspirations of the Negros Island Region. ||
