The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) in Negros Oriental conducted the first water quality monitoring in selected stations at Ocoy River in Sibulan town, the Capitol said Jan. 15.
The water quality monitoring is part of the ENRD’s Water Quality Monitoring Program and was conducted in compliance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s Seal of Good Local Governance (DILG-SGLG) requirements.
It aims to “assess the physicochemical properties in pilot areas of the Ocoy River…and to establish water quality monitoring stations, assess the current water quality in the pilot areas, and establish water quality baseline data.”
The monitoring underscored the ENRD and concerned local government units’ continued commitment to promoting environmental conservation and sustaining water quality monitoring of the river systems in Negros Oriental.

The sampling methods were shown to the students, particularly in measuring the phosphates, nitrates, dissolved oxygen (DO), chloride, and pH levels present in the river stations.
Through the actual field testing, the students were able to observe the monitoring methods, particularly in generating water quality results in each station, enhancing their understanding of water quality indicators and their impact on river ecosystems, the Capitol said in a press release.
The activity was participated in by Sibulan Municipal Environment and Natural Resources officer, Engr. Jimmy Caluscusan, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) student interns from the Negros Oriental High School, among others. ||
