Tropical cyclone wind signal 1 has been hoisted over the northern portion of Negros Occidental, including Escalante, Toboso, Sagay, Cadiz, Calatrava, and Manapla, among others, due to Severe Tropical Storm “Uwan”, the DOST-PAGASA said in its latest bulletin at 5 p.m. Nov. 7.
Other areas in the Visayas under Signal 1 are the northeastern portion of Capiz, like President Roxas, Pilar, Panay, Pontevedra; the northeastern portion of Iloilo, like Carles, Estancia, Balasan, San Dionisio, Concepcion, Batad, Sara, Ajuy; as well as Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, the northern and central portions of Cebu, including Bantayan and Camotes Islands, and the northeastern portion of Bohol.
In Luzon, Signal 1 has been hoisted over the southeastern portion of Quezon, the eastern portion of Romblon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate.
The center of Severe Tropical Storm Uwan was estimated based on all available data at 1,175 km east of Eastern Visayas, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 135 km/h, and central pressure of 975 hPa.
Strong to storm-force winds extend outwards up to 780 km from the center, the weather bureau said.
‘Uwan’ will also bring occasional gusty conditions reaching strong to gale-force strength, especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.
Sea travel is risky for all types or tonnage of vessels, the DOST-PAGASA said. “All mariners must remain in port or, if underway, seek shelter or safe harbor as soon as possible until winds and waves subside.”
‘Uwan’ is forecast to make landfall over the southern portion of Isabela, or the northern portion of Aurora on Sunday, Nov. 9, or early Monday morning, the weather bureau said.
Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials, it added. ||
