Two ash emissions were recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday (Sept. 17), with the first emission lasting more one hour, followed by a short two-minute emission.

Ptolemy Manego, Phivolcs science research assistant, said the ash emission started at 6:18 a.m. and ceased at 7:27 a.m., producing a low plume that drifted north-northeast.

Mañego described the ash emissions as “weak.”

No ashfall was reported in the surrounding areas, he added.

Phivolcs recorded 60 volcanic quakes, with plumes reaching 300 meters and reported an emission of 1,200 tons of sulfur dioxide.

Despite increased seismic activity, Manego said the alert level of Kanlaon Volcano remains at Alert Level 2.

Entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone is prohibited and flying aircraft close to the volcano is also not allowed.

Under Alert Level 2, the institute recommends the evacuation of all residents within a four-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit. | GB
