The Negros Occidental provincial government is setting aside about P411 million for disaster risk reduction and management programs in 2027 as the province braces for a forecast of “super, super, super El Niño” expected to begin in October.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, who presided over the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council meeting on Sept. 10, said the provincial government has started preparations for the prolonged dry spell, which the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said could persist through the first quarter of 2027 and possibly extend into the second quarter.
The P411 million forms part of the province’s 2027 disaster risk reduction and management allocation, with 70 percent or about P287 million earmarked for programs, projects and activities.
The remaining 30 percent, or about P123 million, is allocated for other disaster-related requirements.
Lacson said the province has at least P109 million in quick response fund available for immediate response to disasters and emergencies.
The governor has called for meetings to determine what can be done to prepare, particularly with October fast approaching.
While some areas have already begun experiencing dry conditions, Lacson said the province is still expecting some rainfall this month but stressed the need to prepare early for the anticipated dry spell. | GPB
