The Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc. said July 25 that it has been tapped by the city government as organizer of this year’s MassKara Festival, signaling a vibrant return to its roots, and celebrating the people, culture, and spirit of Bacolod.
“At the heart of this newly-formed foundation is the powerful Hiligaynon word “Gugma”—love. This is not just symbolic love, it is love in action—expressed through service, unity, and cultural pride,” the group said in the press release.

It added that its vision aligns with Mayor Greg Gasataya’s commitment to bring MassKara back to the people—where it truly belongs.
Rodney Mitz Ascalon, who is the foundation president and festival director, said that “Gugma is more than just love. It’s service. It’s sacrifice. It’s giving without asking in return. That’s what this foundation stands for—and what this year’s MassKara will reflect.”
The other officers of the foundation include Atty. Hannah Lea Tañoso Dela Torre, member of the Board of Director, corporate secretary, and Legal Affairs head, who will provide legal guidance and ensure that all operations are grounded in integrity and compliance;
Joanna Angelica Ortillo, also a member of the Board of Director and foundation treasurer, who will spearhead marketing and community engagement strategies; Edsel Prado, in-charge of accounting and finance, ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency; and Christine Panes-Ceraspe, who will oversee the administration and secretariat operations to streamline the foundation’s internal coordination.
With “unity through love” as its core, this year’s MassKara Festival in October is shaping up to be a homegrown celebration powered by grassroots collaboration, the foundation said.
It also invites Bacolodnons to take part, not just as spectators, but as co-creators of a festival that reflects the true heartbeat of the City of Smiles. ||
