The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Western Visayas turned over a climate-resiliency project and conducted a payout activity to 400 partner-beneficiaries in Escalante, Negros Occidental, June 25.

The activity was conducted under the Risk Resiliency Program-Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (RRP-CCAM) of the Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD), in partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Escalante.

A formal ceremony was held to signify the turnover of the community-based resiliency projects to the LGU, followed by a signing of a pledge of support by DSWD6 staff, LGU representatives, and partner-beneficiaries, underscoring their commitment to sustaining the impact of the initiatives, particularly in disaster risk reduction, environmental protection, and community development.

The event was capped off with the distribution of P9,600 each to 400 beneficiaries as compensation for their completion of the 20-day cash-for-work (CFW) on climate change adaptation activities.

A similar turnover ceremony and signing of a pledge of support were also held in Candoni June 18, with 200 partner-beneficiaries benefiting from the payout.

The turnover of the community-based resiliency project to the LGU was also highlighted by the distribution of vegetable seedlings for planting in designated Binhi (Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished) site.

Project Binhi and Lawa (Local Adaptation to Water Access) is designed to maintain agricultural productivity during dry periods and to manage excess water during periods of heavy rainfall associated with La Niña.

The project is among the DSWD’s innovations that focuses on mitigating the impact of food insecurity and water scarcity caused by El Niño, while preparing for the potential effects of the rainy season, the agency said. ||
