About 19 teams from around the country will compete in the National Weightlifting Championships in Dumaguete City, starting tomorrow, June 7, until Independence Day on June 12, at the DCNHS gymnasium.
Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo agreed to host the national event in support of the weightlifting community that gave the Philippines its first-ever Olympic Gold medal with the victory of Hidilyn Diaz in Tokyo, Japan in 2020, the city said June 4.
Weightlifting enthusiasts and the general public are invited to watch the competitions for free at the City High School Gymnasium, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

The competing teams include the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Academy, as well as those from Ifugao, Zamboanga City, Cebu, Bohol, Tagbilaran, Angono in Rizal, Tondo in Manila, Pasig City, municipality of Midsalip in Bulacan, Koronadal, Bayawan, San Jose, Consolacion and Nangka National High School, Philippine Air Force, New Era, GNC and Fitbox 6100.
Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella met with Remollo, other city officials, and the Department of Education Dumaguete to plan and ensure the successful hosting of the prestigious event, that is also expected to promote and reinforce the city as the prime destination for national sports tourism events.
In his letter to Remollo, Puentevalla said he believes that Dumaguete “is the ideal location for the championship due to its rich culture, dynamic sports program, and state-of-the-art facilities.”
The national championships will bring together the most talented weightlifters from across the nation, who will showcase their exceptional skills and inspire the next generation of Olympians.
The city government is assisting the organizers by providing the venue, medical teams, billeting quarters, transportation, security, and local volunteers. ||
