Hog repopulation in San Enrique, Negros Occidental was halted due to the recurrence of hog cholera, Mayor Jilson Tubillara said yesterday.

He said that backyard hog raisers reported deaths of sentinel hogs.

Based on the report of the Provincial Veterinary Office, San Enrique was the hardest-hit local government unit by hog cholera in 2023, wherein 99 percent of its hog population died.

While the laboratory results indicated the hog deaths were not caused by African swine fever (ASF), Tubillara said the symptoms of hog cholera are similar to ASF.

Classical swine fever, also known as hog cholera, is a contagious viral disease of domestic and wild swine.

Tubillara said that the municipal government has prepared other livelihood opportunities for the affected hog raisers.

The mayor said that Cauayan town is now the source of their pork supply.

As of Oct. 2, the Bureau of Animal Industry also reported active ASF cases in two barangays of Bago City. | GB
