Bago, Manapla win environment awards

The local government units of Bago and Manapla were declared champions in the city and municipality categories, respectively, of the 2023 search for Best LGU Compliant with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Act in Negros Occidental.

Bago Mayor Nicholas Yulo received from Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Provincial Administrator, Atty. Rayfrando Diaz, among others, a ceremonial check for P95,000 as the champion city LGU in the Green Environmental Awards.

Manapla Mayor Manolet Escalante received P80,000 in incentive in the town category during the awarding ceremony this morning, Jan. 19, for the “Green Legacy Awards: Excellence in Urban Greening and Innovative Solid Waste Management”, at The Negros Residences in Bacolod City.

Aside from Bago, other winners in the city category are San Carlos, first place; Sagay, second; Cadiz, third; Sipalay, fourth, and Escalante in fifth place.

In the municipality category, the Pulupandan LGU was first place, Murcia, second; Calatrava, third; E.B. Magalona, fourth; and Candoni, fifth, a Capitol press release said.

It added that the Best Active Barangays in Implementing the Segregation at Source and Segregation at Collection are Tinampa-an in Cadiz City, and Purisima in Manapla.

Best Focal Person awardees in implementing SWM innovations are Engr. John Joseph Banaja of Bago City, and Engr. Elean Buenavista of Escalante City; Best Focal Person (FP) awardees in implementing effective management of Central MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) Donah Gelasing of Sipalay City and Bituin Fontanilla of Sagay City;

Best FP awardee in implementing IEC on SWM – Engr. Arthur Batomalaque of San Carlos City; Best FP awardees in implementing effective enforcement program, Eduardo Florendo of Candoni, Engr. John Joseph Banaja of Bago, and Engr. Arthur Batomalaque of San Carlos;

Best FP awardees in implementing waste diversion strategies, Engr. Elean Buenavista of Escalante and Lu Francis Gabas of Calatrava; Best FP awardees in implementing SWM database, Engr. Arthur Batomalaque of San Carlos and Engr. John Joseph Banaja of Bago; Best FP awardees in implementing waste recording system (generated/collected/diverted), Paul Jesaz Aguiree of Cadiz and Donah Gelasing of Sipalay; and Best Active SWM FP awardees Engr. Warren Paduano of Talisay City and Engr. Elean Buenavista of Escalante.

The 2023 provincial search for LGUs compliant with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Year I), was initiated by the Negros Occidental Provincial Environment Management Office and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. ||
