At least 203 families from eight barangays in Talisay City, Negros Occidental were evacuated Monday afternoon, after floodwaters due to continuous rainfall and the onset of high tide threatened their safety.
Dionela Madrona, head of the City Social Welfare Development Office, said at least 1,106 were evacuated, most of them residents of Barangay Zone 14-B.
The affected families, including those from Barangay Zone 14-A, were brought to the nearest chapel that was converted into temporary evacuation center, Madrona said.
Families from Barangay Zone 8, who agreed to move out of their homes for pre-emptive evacuation, were brought to the nearest basketball court, while families from Zone 11 were advised to take temporary shelter at the nearest chapel, she added.
Evacuated residents from zones 12-A and 13 are temporarily staying at the Barangay Hall, Madrona said.
Meanwhile, the Talisay City Disaster Risk Management, headed by Spyxe Gutierrez, has been coordinating the rescue and disaster calls from Barangay Dos Hermanas and Mapalaron in Barangay Zone12.
The evacuated families were given food packs at the evacuation center, while those living near flood-prone areas were already advised to move out and proceed to the evacuation center./MML
