The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it has completed widening works, worth P39.4 million, along a 2.5-kilometer section of the Kabankalan-Bais Road in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The project, undertaken by DPWH Negros Occidental 3rd District Engineering Office, included the widening of both sides of the road, each measuring 3.65 meters wide, with pipe culverts, grouted riprap, stone masonry, metal guard rails, and steel posts.

In his report to Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH6 director Sanny Boy Oropel said that the road improvement in Barangay Tagukon will complete the widening of the whole stretch of the national highway connecting Kabankalan to the municipality of Mabinay in Negros Oriental.

The Kabankalan-Bais Road traverses vast agricultural lands, making farming the main source of income in the city, the DPWH said in a statement April 17, adding that with the entire stretch of road widened from two to four lanes, more vehicles will be accommodated, easing traffic congestion and improving the accessibility and safety of motorists traveling between the two provinces.

Locals can also expect a more efficient delivery of goods and services to far-flung areas and neighboring towns, opening more opportunities for socio-economic development, the DPWH said.

Its Negros Occidental 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO), meanwhile, completed two multi-purpose buildings (MPBs) in Himamaylan City and Moises Padilla, expected to benefit the defense and education sectors.

The P13.6-million project in Himamaylan was the construction of the third phase of the two-storey Officers Quarters building with outside utilities, to serve as an office dormitory for military personnel.

This MPB aims to provide officers with an office that is conducive for strategic planning, and a comfortable shelter away from home, Oropel said.

The P14.8-million project in Barangay 7, Moises Padilla, involved the construction of a dormitory that will accommodate students and faculty members of the Central Philippine State University (CPSU) campus in the town, and aims to lessen their expenses and travel time. ||
