Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo said that implementing the Smart Traffic Light Management System Project aims to improve the efficiency of traffic flow and promote public safety in 20 pre-identified areas.

It will be funded by the local government, the city said Oct. 18, adding that civil works also continue for the first traffic lights system at the junction of E-Rovira to Leopoldo Rovira East Drive in Barangay Bantayan.

This project involves the installation of four traffic signal controllers and signal heads, pedestrian light, traffic control panel, and vehicle detection cameras that can detect both stationary and moving vehicles, the city earlier said.

It is funded by the Department of Transportation through the LTO Traffic Management Mentorship Program Component B Traffic Signalization and Installation of Systems.

The city, meanwhile, said the budget for the locally-funded traffic lights has been submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod July 9.

Remollo had said the city’s traffic lights system aims to adopt a demand-based traffic operation to improve efficiency, utilizing a smart traffic signal controller that can analyze real-time traffic data from the signal inputs of strategically-installed traffic camera sensors.

He said this is in line with efforts to make the city livable, as Dumaguete is fast becoming as a thriving hub for economic activities and as gateway to Negros Oriental. ||
