The “Polar Points” exhibit, featuring the artworks of visual artist Ayla Abonado and her husband, multidisciplinary contemporary artist Zanzibar “Billy Boy” Abonado Jr., opened at Art Cove at Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod Feb. 3, and will run until April 4 this year.
“While the artists share a name and a home, this exhibition asks us to witness the beauty found in opposites,” Archie Javellana, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod Rooms Division manager, said in his message at the exhibit opening. “There is a magnetic pull in contrast…a dialogue between two distinct creative cores – the discipline of the grid versus the freedom of the gradient.”
Javellana took note of Ayla’s cross-stitch, which finds beauty in precision. “It is art built on patience, where every point is calculated, structured, and steady. It represents the quiet strength of order.”

“Billy’s oil paintings, on the other hand, find beauty in fluidity. His work is driven by the spontaneous movement of the brush and the depth of the pigment. It represents the vibrant energy of emotion,” he added.
“The magic of ‘Polar Points’ is that these opposites do not clash; they complete one another. The structure enhances the flow, and the flow softens the structure. It is a visual reminder that two people can be inextricably linked in life, yet remain beautifully distinct in their craft,” Javellana pointed out.
Ayla, known professionally as Ayla August, is a resident artist at Storm Tattoo Studio, and held the distinction of being one of the first female artists to break into the city’s male-dominated tattoo industry since 2016, the artist brief states.
“Her work is a sophisticated blend of floral motifs, intricate detailing, and blackwork realism. A regular fixture in local competitions and conventions, Ayla’s mission extends beyond her own craft – she is committed to encouraging and empowering other female artists to take their place in the spotlight,” it added.
Billy Boy is a seasoned graffiti writer making waves locally and internationally. He won first place in the province-wide painting competition during the 58th Charter celebration of Cadiz City in 2025, and named as Outstanding Artist of his home municipality, Valladolid, in 2015.
The couple’s artworks are available for purchase, and those interested may contact Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod for more details. | CGC
