New Year’s Day flood triggers evacuation in Victorias, Talisay

                At least 3,880 families in cities of Talisay and Victorias in northern Negros Occidental were affected by the New Year’s Day Flood, initial reports from the Talisay City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and PDRMO said.

                Moderate to heavy rains that started on New Year’s eve and lasted until 4 a.m. the next day triggered the flood that affected 3,467 families from seven barangays in Talisay City. It also forced 413 families in Victorias City to evacuate to different centers, the reports said.

In Silay City, 123 families composed of 427 individuals in Barangays 1, 2, and 3 and portion of Mambulak evacuated to the Cultural Civic Center, while families affected by the flood in Barangays Guinhalaran and E. Lopez are temporarily staying at schools in the area, Silay Mayor Mark Golez said.

                As of press time, 19 families are staying in Victorias Cultural and Civic Center, 70 families at the Victorias City Coliseum, 68 families at Brgy 9 Hall, 206 families in Barangay 3 Hall, and 50 families at Daan Banwa Bus Terminal, initial report from the PDRMO said.

                Relief operations from the CDRRMO of both LGUs are ongoing.

In Talisay, the city government immediately distributed hot meals to the affected individuals who evacuated to the barangay gyms while distribution of rice is ongoing. — MML
