The demolition of decades-old stalls at Manokan Country in Bacolod City has started this week, to give way to the planned redevelopment.
Fourteen of the more than 20 stalls originally operating at Manokan are now temporarily located at the SM north terminal hub just across the old site. The rest of the tenants were not allowed to transfer to the new spot for failure to settle their rents with the city.
The 14 Manokan tenants will operate in the new site rent-free, as per initial agreement with SM Prime Holdings, while the company redevelops the iconic eatery complex into “a future-ready tourist destination.”

Mayor Alfredo Benitez said in a press conference Feb. 25 that the Manokan tenants “are better off in the new location” since they are near the National University and the mall, and are readily assured of customers.
The ongoing clearing and demolition of the stalls, and removal of remaining informal settlers in the area will be until middle of next month.
Father M. Ferrero Street, from corner of Rizal Street to Burgos Street, will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic until March 15 to “give way for the fencing and piling activity of SM Prime in relation to its development of Manokan Country.”
Benitez signed in October 2023 the 40-year lease contract with SM Prime to develop the city’s properties near the mall, including the Manokan Country.
SM Supermalls president Steven Tan turned over to the city a check for P131 million, representing seven years of advance rental, at the contract signing.
Tycoon Hans Sy of SM Prime, who was honored as adopted son and honorary mayor of Bacolod Jan. 30 for this year’s Bacolaodiat Festival celebration, said the Manokan Country “redevelopment is more than a structural upgrade; it is a step toward preserving Bacolod’s traditions while embracing its potential as a world-class city.”
A revitalized Manokan Country will ensure that it remains a beacon for tourism and a source of economic progress for its community of tenants, who have made it a cherished part of Bacolod’s heritage, Sy stressed.
He also committed to assist in the growth and wellbeing of Manokan tenants. “We will provide financial literacy workshops, safer, new and more sustainable facilities, and a beautiful building that will surely bring in more customers.” | CGC
