Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said Oct. 6 that he still considers Congressman Greg Gasataya as a member of Grupo Progreso.
Gasataya’s picture appeared in the line-up as “congressman” when the GP candidates were presented before the filing of their Certificates of Candidacy at the city Commission on Elections Oct. 6.
Leonardia added that Gasataya did not leave GP, and that he even invited him the night before to join the launching.
The solon was not present at the presentation of the candidates in a hotel, or the Holy Mass that followed at the San Sebastian Cathedral. But he released a statement to the media, saying he appreciates the gestures of support that Leonardia, and former congressman Albee Benitez, “have shown me in my current position”.
He took note of Leonardia’s statement that he is still considered part of the Grupo Progreso family. “Benitez has assured that he supports my candidacy regardless of my political position. I extend my sincere appreciation for their kind words and may we all continue to work for the welfare of the people of Bacolod City,” Gasataya added.
He earlier announced that he will not take sides and will run as a neutral candidate in the May 2022 polls, saying the two contenders for mayor of Bacolod “are significant parts of both my political and personal journey. They were my ‘maninoys’ on my wedding way back many years.”
On Tuesday, Benitez said he respects the decision of Gasataya to be neutral, and not to join or endorse the administration group as he had promised.

Leonardia and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, meanwhile, presented their candidates for the Sangguniang Panlungsod, including incumbent councilors Archie Baribar, Carl Lopez, Renecito Novero, Dindo Ramos, Cindy Rojas, and Israel Salanga; Em Legaspi-Ang, Jonathan Diaz, Ed Guillem, Cash Montalvo, Marlon Solidum, and Dr. Chris Sorongon.
Leonardia said Grupo Progreso members braved the health crisis and have shown their sincere desire for public service. “This is the group that weathered the pandemic and will try to put Bacolod City back to happy days.”
He added that the group worked full time to face the problems brought by the pandemic and never left the city. His group will bring the city on the road to recovery and will put Bacolod back on track, Leonardia said.
He said his team is a “perfect combination” because of experience and competency, and they represent the different sectors of society. He asked Bacolodnons for their continued support, adding that their track records prove their ability to work and serve the people of Bacolod. – MML
