Lacson to discuss NIR plan with new guv of Neg. Or.

Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said Friday, March 17, that he is planning to reach out to newly-assumed Negros Oriental Gov. Carlo Jorge Juan “Guido” Reyes to start fresh talks on the Negros Island Region.

Lacson said his staff is contacting the Office of Reyes for a meeting.

Before his assassination, former governor Roel Degamo, who opposed the creation of NIR, had a meeting with Lacson in Dumaguete City, to discuss the proposed new Visayas region.

Negros Island solons are planning to have a dialogue with their fellow lawmakers in the Senate on the NIR bill, after it was approved by the House of Representatives, 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Marañon III said.

Marañon, one of the authors of the NIR bill, said they will discuss its passage with their counterparts in the Senate.

The Senate Committee on Local Government earlier approved five bills seeking the establishment of the NIR, to be composed of Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor./GB
