Forest ranger in hot water for baby’s death

A forest ranger deputized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to help preserve the Northern Negros Natural Park is now in hot water, after his gun reportedly discharged and the bullet hit and killed a minor in Sitio Aluyan, Brgy. Caduha-an, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Dec. 5.

The suspect, identified as Nomar Ayan Berto, is facing reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, the police said.

The one year-old girl was hit in the head and declared dead on arrival at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City, after initial treatment at the Dr. Ramon Gustilo Hospital in Manapla, the police said.

She was reportedly playing inside their house when she was hit by the stray bullet, initial police investigation showed.

The suspect surrendered to the police Dec. 7, but his firearm has not been recovered, as of this time.

The Cadiz police investigation showed that the suspect and other forest rangers were having a drinking spree, prior to the incident. — GB
