Negros Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer yesterday confirmed reports that he will run for congressman of the 4th District in the 2025 mid-term elections.
The position is currently held by his wife, Rep. Juliet Marie Ferrer, who is serving her third and last term.
Ferrer, now in his second term as vice governor, said he will continue the programs started by his wife, who was also his successor then.
Before he was elected to the province’s second highest post, Ferrer was a member of the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2016.
Ferrer said that his wife will already retire from politics after finishing her term.
On reports that he is being offered the post as an ambassador, he replied in jest, “Secret.”
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has also confirmed that he is seeking reelection for a third and final term in 2025.
Lacson, head of the Love Negros group, and Ferrer, president of United Negros Alliance (UNegA), both ran under a coalition in the 2019 and 2022 elections.
Ferrer said the next candidate for vice governor will be decided by UNegA, as stipulated in the agreement between them and Love Negros, and “should come from the south.”
“There should be balance. The south of the province should be taken care of as well as the north. It’s a perfect combination,” he added.
Lacson hails from San Carlos City in the north while Ferrer comes from La Carlota City down south.
Still, Ferrer refused to name yet those included in the shortlist.
He pointed out that UNegaA had committed “to allow Gov. Bong to finish his term until 2028.”
“After 2028, we can discuss again who we will field as coalition candidates for governor and vice governor,” he said. | GB
