The Energy Development Corporation, a subsidiary of First Gen Corporation, recently marked its five decades of geothermal energy development in the country.
EDC, the world’s top vertically integrated geothermal producer, which was first established as a government-owned entity through Presidential Decree 927 on March 5, 1976, was tasked with tapping local geothermal resources to cut the Philippines’ dependence on imported oil.
The initiative propelled the nation to become a global geothermal leader by the mid-1980s, and today geothermal remains the only renewable energy source capable of delivering baseload power to the grid.
“EDC was built on a clear mission: to harness our country’s own resources and build a power supply that keeps our energy grid strong and secure,” First Gen Chairman Federico Lopez said.
“As a cornerstone of our clean energy leadership, this 50-year journey is a milestone we share with the entire nation,” Lopez said.
EDC joined the First Gen group following its privatization in 2007, and has since been central to the company’s position as a renewable energy trailblazer.

In tandem with the anniversary celebration, First Gen launched a unified corporate brand designed to streamline its offerings and reinforce its commitment to leading the energy transition.
The rebrand brings together the company’s power generation, supply, and solutions under a single umbrella, placing renewable energy at the heart of its identity.
“Our new brand is about bringing clarity to everyone we work with – from our teams to our partners, clients, and communities,” explained First Gen President Giles Puno. “It reflects how we’ve always operated: as one integrated organization focused on delivering dependable energy solutions that meet real-world needs.”
The unified structure introduces three distinct business lines:
– First Gen Renewables encompasses the company’s full fleet of 28 power facilities, which generate electricity from geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar sources.
– First Gen Energy Supply links these generation assets to diverse customers, including direct supply partners, wholesale buyers, and participants in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
– First Gen Energy Solutions provides tools to help clients manage their energy use, including on-site solar installations, energy audits, and remote monitoring systems tailored to sustainability goals.

Puno highlighted that modern energy customers are looking beyond just where their power comes from.
“People want to know if their energy is reliable, affordable, and supports their long-term transition plans,” he said. “Our unified approach lets us respond faster to these needs by breaking down barriers across our organization.”
The new brand identity – featuring harmonized names and visual elements – is now being rolled out to all stakeholders across the Philippines.
The refreshed logo maintains the iconic infinite loop that represents regeneration, while updated colors reflect the evolution of renewable energy technologies and the company’s ambition to green the national power grid. ||
