Dumaguete DRRM Council okays P97M safety projects

Members of the Dumaguete City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, presided over by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, unanimously approved some P97.1 million worth of projects, programs, and activities that will boost public safety and protect the coastal barangays from the ill-effects of climate change.

Remollo said that among the priority projects to be funded by the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Trust Fund are the construction of a bridge traversing Banica River connecting barangays Taclobo and Tabuc-tubig at P30 million; seawall for shoreline protection in Barangay Calindagan, P25 million;

Continued construction of a seawall for shoreline protection in Barangay Calindagan, P5 million; purchase of two generator sets for the evacuation center, P4 million; one brand new ambulance for rescue operation, P3 million; construction/rehabilitation of box culverts, drainage system, and flood control structures along creeks and waterways in various barangays, P12.4 million;

Purchase of three portable generator sets for the EOC and Command Center at P2 million; capacity development program, like seminars and trainings, P1.1 million; and rehabilitation/improvement of seawall and damaged existing road shoulder along Piapi-Bantayan Road junction E.J. Blanco Road at P14.6 million.

“These projects will help ensure the safety of the students, motorists, and residents in the coastal barangays and along Banica River from floods, big waves, and storm surges, especially during inclement weather,” Remollo stressed in a city press release Aug. 20.

City DRRM officer Allen Froilan Cabaron said that the new ambulance will complement the existing emergency vehicles while the generators will help guarantee that the evacuation centers, health facilities, and operations center will continue to be viable before, during, and after a disaster or emergency. ||
