Chess tourney winners named

The San Carlos City-Negros Chess Club awarded the winners of its two-day Open Chess Tournament Oct. 6, at Park Marina.

From the 145 chess participants, International Master (IM) Joel Pimentel Jr. emerged as champion and bagged a medal, a digital clock, and P40,000 in cash prize.

Pimentel was followed by National Master (NM) Rommel Ganzon with P15,000 in cash prize; Bertil Svendsen as third place winner of P10,000; Venancio Loyola Jr., fourth placer, P7,500; and Fide Master (FM) Ellan Asuela, fifth placer with P5,000 in cash prize.

NM Edsel Montoya, Theseus Benitez, Jay Dicen, Bonn Rainauld Tibod, NM Rolzon Roullo placed sixth to 10th placers, respectively, and bagged P5,000 in cash prize each, the city said.

NM Jayson Salubre, Juno Davad, FM Mario Mangubat, NM Edwin Tan, Manasseh Jao, Allan Salientes, Reynaldo Flores, Francis Teodor Mangubat, Jovito Salvatuna III, and Romeo Sadia III received P1,000 each for being in top 11th to 20th spots.

Category winners Apple Rubin as Top Female, and Mario Mangubat for Top Senior each won P2,000 in cash.

Rubin was also hailed winner of Top Under 18, while Mahdy Villacasten secured the Top Under 13, with P1,500 in cash prize.

For Top PWD with P1,000 as prize, Allan Salientes emerged as winner. NM Edwin Tan in Top San Carlos, P1,000; and Nishan Guanco for Top Under 8, P500, the city said.

LGU-San Carlos City representative, Engr. Arthur Batomalaque, said he was happy seeing various players gathered for the event and seemed to have enjoyed the game.

Tournament organizer Henry Silva said the game enhanced the participant’s skills, especially in competing with master players.
