Varied researches were made to prove and disprove the impact of colors in people and the surroundings.

The internet defines color psychology as the study of hues as a determinant of human behaviour and how it influences perceptions.

As the election season in the Philippines unfolds with the filing of Certificates of Candidacy of those who seek an elective post in the May 2022 polls, we see candidates strutting off their political colors.

Most political logos use the primary colors – red, blue and yellow. Research suggests that red is the color of strength and power, while blue is for trust and responsibility. Yellow is the color of the mind and intellect.

Interestingly, while political parties in the Philippines, such as the Liberal Party and the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino– Lakas ng Bayan, or PDP-Laban, have similar red, yellow, and blue combination in their logos, candidates of these parties opted to adopt their own campaign colors.

Incumbent Senator Christopher Lawrence Go, the official candidate of PDP-Laban for vice president, wore white when he filed his COC, while Vice President Leni Robredo, the presidential candidate of Liberal Party, wore a blue dress with a pink ribbon pin.

Obviously, the political party itself is no longer enough to get the needed votes from the electorate. The principles of the political parties and the characteristics exemplified by the colors of its logo hardly matter when the candidates are on the campaign trail. Identification and attention retention among voters are vital, thus, choosing the right color for a certain candidate is crucial.

This early, we can say that Robredo made an impact with her blue and pink combination as she addressed the people from the podium bearing the Seal of the Vice President. While she is associated with the yellows of the Aquino administration and wore the color when she ran and won as vice president in 2016, Robredo decided to be different this time.

Perhaps, she is disassociating herself from the negative perceptions of those in the yellow camp, or she simply wants to be her own person.

Regardless, as Robredo wraps up her speech after filing her COC, the attention of the Filipino voters is now shifting towards Malacañang, from where Robredo’s rival is expected to emerge. – NND
