The Cadiz local government started enforcing the ordinance regulating single-use plastics, with the launching held at the city public market July 3.

At the launching led by Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. and other officials, with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Cadiz, market vendors and customers were urged to be active participants in this environmental advocacy to prove that collective action begins with small, conscious steps.

City Ordinance 13-2021, which regulates the use of single-use plastics in Cadiz, is a vital move in the journey towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Cadiz, the CENRO said in a statement.

This ordinance is more than just a regulation, it’s a call for transformation. It aims to reduce plastic waste, protect ecosystems, and instill a deep sense of environmental responsibility across the city, it added.

To symbolize the shift towards sustainable alternatives, eco-bags were distributed by city officials during the launching, encouraging Cadizeños to make the eco-friendly choice in their daily lives.

CENRO-Cadiz head, Engr. Florentino Caceres Jr., also discussed provisions of the ordinance during the program. “Together, we move forward toward a plastic-free Cadiz one action, one eco-bag, one community at a time.”

Paul Jesaz Aguirre, focal person of the city’s Solid Waste Management, emphasized the importance of waste reduction and behavioral change, while City Economic Enterprise Management Office OIC Robert Regodos called on everyone—especially market vendors and patrons—to take part in this collective effort toward greener practices.

The implementation of the ordinance is another step forward in Cadiz’s ongoing commitment to environmental protection and responsible solid waste management, the city stressed. ||
