A barangay captain was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Barangay Kansumandig, La in Negros Oriental on Wednesday, police reported.
The victim, identified as Dennis Jimpayan, was the incumbent barangay captain of Kansumandig, according to the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR).
Initial investigation showed Jimpayan was driving home in his motorcycle from Barangay Pacuan when gunmen opened fire at Sitio Mabilog, Kansumandig.
Residents later discovered his lifeless body along the road after hearing multiple gunshots.
Regional police director PBrig. Gen. Rudecindo Reales personally supervised the response and ordered the creation of a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
Responding officers recovered three empty .45-caliber shells, four slugs, and a cellular phone at the crime scene.
The motive and identities of the suspects remain under investigation, PRO-NIR said. | GPB
