The Sangguniang Panlungsod declared Aug. 7 Yulo’s Park at Rosario Street, Barangay 14, as an important cultural property and historical landmark in Bacolod City.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Em Ang, chairperson of the SP Committee on History, Culture and Arts, stressed that Yulo’s Park, which will turn 105 years old this Aug. 10, has great historical significance and received its historical marker from the National Museum on Sept. 28, 2017.

“The Yulo’s Park house was built on Aug. 10, 1919 by the late statesman, Don Mariano Yulo, governor of Negros Occidental and eventually a senator of the Republic during the Commonwealth period. His son, Alfredo Yulo, was mayor of Bacolod from May 27, 1940 to May 29, 1942,” Ang said.

She noted that during a grand dinner for then President Manuel Quezon at Yulo’s Park, the drinking glasses were specially painted with the Philippine flag as a show of nationalism, and a prelude to Philippine independence.

The Sangguniang Panglungsod of Bacolod City recognizes the importance of preserving cultural and historical heritage in accordance with the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009, or Republic Act 10066.

“The Yulo’s Park is a significant historical landmark, and an important cultural property that must be preserved and protected for future generations, as provided under RA No.10066,” the resolution, approved by the SP during its regular session this afternoon, adding the park, “being an important cultural property of Bacolod, must also be registered in the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property. | CGC
