The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod approved on third and final reading the proposed ordinance promoting walkability in the highly-urbanized city, and the Engineer’s Office will identify the priority areas for implementation.

Speed limits in crowded/urban areas shall be reduced to 30 km/h to prioritize pedestrian safety, while traffic calming devices, such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, and chicanes (extra turns or curves in a road) shall be installed in areas with high pedestrian activity, the ordinance, authored by Councilor Em Ang and co-authored by Councilor Cindy Rojas, states.

The local government shall conduct regular road clearing operations in all city roads in the implementation and enforcement of existing road clearing ordinances, and shall supervise barangays and other government offices to ensure their compliance, the ordinance added.

“The City of Bacolod envisions a safe, accessible, and sustainable urban environment that prioritizes pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and promotes the well-being of its citizens,” Ang stressed, adding that sufficient funds shall be allocated by the city in support of walkability initiatives. | CGC
