A “waste analysis and characterization study” will be conducted in Bacolod City following the authorization granted to Mayor Alfredo Benitez to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP).
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod June 7 approved a resolution allowing the mayor to sign the MOA and the “grant of P960,000 to SWAPP to cover the project cost”.
The amount is 80 percent of the P1,200,000 total project cost for the conduct of the study “that will serve as baseline information for the development, formulation and/updating of the 10-year solid waste management plan of Bacolod,” the MOA said.
WACS, or waste analysis and characterization study, is a basic planning tool in identifying necessary solid waste management interventions, based on sound and reliable data.
It covers the whole city/municipality waste stream, from waste sources, such as residential, commercial, industrial, governmental, or other sources to disposal site, or end-of-pipe; and helps to determine the volume of wastes generated at source, and the potential for recovery and actual volume of wastes brought to the disposal site, the MOA added.
SWAPP is a non-stock non-profit organization based in Quezon City, and with extensive experience in solid waste management, research study, preparation of SWM plans, and implementation of SWM programs, among others./CGC
