A remnant of the New People’s Army died in an encounter with Philippine Army soldiers in Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Friday (June 6).

Soldiers of the 94th Infantry Battalion chanced upon five suspected rebels, believed to be remnants of the dismantled Central Negros 2, which led to a gunbattle, according to initial military reports.

The slain suspected rebel was identified by the Philippine Army as alias “Gringo”.

The soldiers also recovered an M16 assault rifle and personal belongings of the fleeing rebels.

No one was hurt among the troops, who are still in pursuit of the fleeing rebel remnants as of press time. | GB
