Celebrating 120 years of music, service, and embodying the Sillimanian tradition is the Silliman University Band with “Legacy in Sound,” a three-show anniversary concert staged over the weekend at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.
Led by Band Director Asst. Prof. Joseph Albert P. Basa, the concert featured the Silliman University Band, the SU Band Twirlers, and returning Band alumni. The program brought together classical standards, cinematic soundtracks, and contemporary pop music in celebration of the generations of musicians who have shaped the ensemble.
The anniversary traces the Band’s beginnings to 1906, when the first Silliman Band was organized following the arrival of instruments donated by Dr. Horace B. Silliman. Historical accounts differ on who organized the original ensemble, but University records identify Fulgencio Andayan and Dr. Walter O. McIntire with its beginnings. The original Band had 23 members, many of whom came from Siquijor.
Over the decades, the Band evolved from its early formation and its later connection with the ROTC Band into the marching and concert ensemble known today. A major period of transformation began in 1985 under Prof. Joseph B. Basa, when the Band grew from about 29 members to 100 by Silliman’s centennial in 2001. It also expanded its reach through performances in cities and communities across the Philippines.
Asst. Prof. Basa assumed the Band’s directorship in 2013, continuing its development as both a performing ensemble and University service unit. Through its rehearsals, performances, and institutional engagements, the Band has also served as a training ground for students from various academic disciplines, developing musicianship alongside discipline, teamwork, leadership, and service.
In recent years, the Band has strengthened its marching and competitive programs. Among its milestones is a six consecutive championship run in marching band competitions. In January 2026, it represented SU at the Sinulog Brass Band Competition at the Cebu City Sports Center, where it finished first runner-up.
The 120th anniversary was anchored on the theme “Legacy in Sound,” honoring the musicians, conductors, alumni, students, and supporters who have contributed to the Band across generations. The theme also recognizes the memories, relationships, experiences, and values passed from one generation of Sillimanians to another through music.
