Someone once asked a man, “Who are you?” Before he could answer, another person spoke for him: “He is a failure.”
The man hung his head. He believed it. He had allowed his past to define him. He carried the weight of shame, regret, and labels that others had placed on him.
Many of us are like that man. We let our past mistakes define who we are. But the Bible tells a different story. Our identity is not found in our past. It is found in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here.” When we come to Jesus, we are not repaired. We are made new. Our identity is no longer tied to what we have done. It is tied to what He has done.
First, your identity is not defined by your past failures.
Many people live under the weight of their past. They have done things they are ashamed of. They have hurt others.
They have made choices they regret. And they believe that those choices define who they are. But the Bible says otherwise. Romans 8:1 declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Condemnation is the enemy of identity. It tells you that you are beyond hope. But the cross says something different. The cross says that your sins are forgiven.
The cross says that your past is not your future. The cross says that you are not defined by your worst moment. You are defined by the One who died for you.
Second, your identity is found in being a child of God.
John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
This is your true identity. Not a failure. Not a mistake. Not a victim. A child of God. When you believe in Jesus, you are adopted into God’s family. You are given a new name. You are given a new inheritance. You are given a new future.
Let go of the labels that have held you captive. The lies that you are not enough, that you are too far gone, that you will never change because these are not from God.
God calls you His beloved. God calls you forgiven. God calls you His child. Receive your true identity today. Not based on what you have done, but based on what Christ has done for you. | NWI
