Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon III challenged the new recipients of the Alfredo G. Maranon, Jr. Scholarship Program to hurdle the challenges that come their way to achieve their ultimate goals and pursue their life-long dreams.

At the general assembly today, Nov. 27,  held at Balay Kauswagan, Marañon told the scholars that they should always put to good use the opportunity given them, especially in these trying times.

“It is our will power (that will give us the strength) to hurdle these trying times.  We need to persevere and adjust. We need to be grateful that we are here and alive and have this opportunity”, said Marañon, who keynoted the contract signing ceremonies.

The mayor said he is looking forward to see the day that the scholars will finish their studies and achieve their dreams .

The Alfredo G. Maranon, Jr. Scholarship Program is now going on its 12th year.  It was established in 2008, and has nearly 4,500 scholars. Some 612 beneficiaries have already graduated.

Marañon said that during the last two months, the local government and Department of Education have been going around schools distributing supplies especially in

far-flung areas.

There is really a big challenge as we shift to the new normal, he noted.

He encouraged the scholars “not to let this opportunity pass”, as he called on the parents ans guardians to support their children in their studies.

Engr Maricon Lonzaga, head of the Sagay City Planning and Development Office,  said not all LGUs have scholarship programs hence she appealed to all recipients to take their studies seriously.

She said this is only for Sagaynons that is why requirements are strict.

There are 375 scholars enlisted in the program for this school year with following courses: BS in Engineering, BS in Civil Engineering, BS in Mechanical Engineering, BS in Chemical Engineering, BS in Electrical Engineering, BS in Education, BS in Veterinary Medicine, BS in Accountancy, BS in Nursing, Midwifery, BS in Agriculture, BS in Fisheries.
