Binalbagan Mayor Alejandro Mirasol said tonight, April 21, that containment measures have already been implemented to limit the spread of the molasses spill involving the Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company Inc. (Biscom).

“Our teams, in collaboration with Biscom Inc. and relevant environmental agencies, will actively work on cleanup and recovery efforts to restore the affected area immediately,” Mirasol said in a statement, but did not specify the scope or affected area/s.

“On behalf of the local government unit, Biscom Inc. and agencies concerned, we apologize for the inconvenience” brought by this incident, the mayor said in his post. “If ever health issues arise regarding this matter, please proceed to the Binalbagan Infirmary immediately.”

Mirasol said the molasses spill incident occurred April 19, involving the Biscom.

He added that upon learning of the spill, the LGU, through its Municipal Environment Office and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office immediately coordinated with Biscom management to address the situation and mitigate any potential impact.

“We take this matter very seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our residents and the environment,” Mirasol said, adding they also met with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau, Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-Kabankalan, the Marine Environmental Protection Office, and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, together with concerned barangay officials.

“We assure the community that we are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. The health and safety of our residents and the preservation of our natural resources remain our top priorities,” he stressed. | Binalbagan MAO/LDRRMO photos
