The groundbreaking ceremony for Bacolod’s Recovery and Recycling Complex at the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa will be held this morning, March 12, Mayor Alfredo Benitez said.

Phase 1 of the project will include an eco-park and will be “a game-changer in our city’s waste management efforts,” Benitez said in a statement.

“A cleaner, more sustainable Bacolod is within reach. Let’s make it happen,” he stressed.

The 33.13-hectare facility will also house a mechanized Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to process biodegradable waste, such as food wastes and yard wastes; and recyclables, like plastic, glass, paper, and metal.

“This will reduce landfill waste and drive us toward a circular economy,” Benitez said.

The recycling complex is part of the planned expansion of the sanitary landfill in the properties bought by the city government in 2023 for P128 million, with funds sourced from its P4.4 billion loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines.

“These properties, acquired by the local government of Bacolod City through a Deed of Absolute Sale from private landowners, have been reclassified from agricultural to various land use classifications,” the project description states.

“This reclassification is intended to accommodate the necessary additional facilities for the Bacolod Integrated Recycling and Technology Hub, of which the landfill is a part,” it added.
