Motorists and pedestrians passing through the junction of E-Rovira to Leopoldo Rovira East Drive in Barangay Bantayan, Dumaguete City, experienced for the first time how to navigate the roads, following the start of the operations of the nationally-funded prototype traffic lights system Feb. 17.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo led local officials and traffic officers in enforcing rules so that both motorists and pedestrians will be more acquainted with the use of Smart CCTV Traffic Lights System that will also be installed in 20 additional locations across the City of Dumaguete.

Enforcers were deployed to guide and instruct road users so they can follow the system designed to control and monitor the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to efficiently manage the traffic, for smoother and safer travel of both motorists and pedestrians, the city said.

The newly-commissioned traffic lights system is funded by the Department of Transportation, through the Land Transportation Office, and involves the installation of four traffic signal controllers and signal heads, pedestrian light, traffic control panel, and vehicle detection cameras that can detect both stationary and moving vehicles.

Meanwhile, funding for the Smart CCTV Traffic Lights System to be installed in 20 other locations, 15 of them in downtown areas and five along the Dumaguete Diversion Road, remains pending before the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The locally-funded project, worth P22.9 million, will require 68 units of traffic lights, signal timer, traffic flow CCTVs that can detect vehicles, and 20 signal controllers with fiber optic cables.

The funding request has been included in the city’s proposed budget for 2025 that has yet to be acted upon by the SP since it was submitted in October last year. ||
