All police units, including in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, are on heightened alert as the Simbang Gabi, or nine dawn masses, starts today, Dec. 16.
“Our priority is to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all devotees participating in this sacred tradition,” Philippine National Police chief, General Rommel Francisco Marbil, said in a statement Dec. 15. “We have increased police presence in churches and surrounding areas to ensure public safety throughout the Simbang Gabi period.”
Police assistance desks (PADs) will be deployed near churches to assist the public, while foot and mobile patrols will be intensified in strategic areas, including public transport terminals, parking areas, and marketplaces.
The police also heightened the monitoring of crime-prone areas to prevent potential threats.
Marbil urged devotees to remain vigilant, secure their personal belongings, and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
Churchgoers are also advised to arrive early at church venues to avoid overcrowding and to comply with security protocols.
“Police units nationwide are working closely with local government units, barangay officials, and other law enforcement agencies to respond to any emergencies or untoward incidents,” Marbil said, adding the PNP remains committed to providing a safe environment for all Filipinos during this holiday season. ||
