Siquijor officials learn Dumaguete’s best practices on local governance

Local officials and employees from the municipality of Maria in Siquijor, led by Mayor Roselyn Asok, met with Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo July 8 in line with their study tour to learn the best practices of the City for possible emulation in their town.

The visitors from Siquijor toured and learned the operation and system of the Central Materials Recovery Facility that converts solid wastes into hollow blocks, pavers, and plastic chairs.

Dumaguete won the “Best in Resource Recovery in a Centralized Materials Recovery Facility” award among all the cities and municipalities in Central Visayas, from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau VII.

The Maria officials and employees also visited the septage wastewater treatment facility that processes desludge water to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the underground water supply, the city said in a press release July 9.

Asok, councilors, and department heads also toured the Pantawan People’s Park, which is an open space for sports, recreation, and parking, following the implementation of the shoreline protection project along Rizal Boulevard.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Full Council of Central Visayas had commended the city government for initiating this proactive climate change mitigating shoreline protection project in Barangay Poblacion1-Tinago.

The project aims to protect the lives and properties of residents and visitors, and establishments along Rizal Boulevard and in Barangay Poblacion 1, all the way to the mouth of the Banica River.

Remollo also discussed the benefits of the creation of the Negros Island Region that will guarantee easier access to basic services, and accelerate economic growth in Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor. ||
