As we continue our 17-part Seeds of Faith series focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, proudly supported by Central Philippine University, today we turn our attention to the third goal: Good Health and Well-being. Our guiding scripture is found in 3 John 1:2, which says, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
First, remember that God desires for us to have Good Health and Well-being.
In 3 John 1:2, John expresses a heartfelt prayer for his friend’s physical health and overall well-being, paralleling his wish for the friend’s spiritual prosperity. This verse highlights that God cares deeply about every aspect of our lives – spiritual, physical, and emotional. It is God’s desire that we live healthy and fulfilling lives, free from the burdens of illness and distress.
As Christians, we recognize that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Therefore, taking care of our physical health is not just a personal responsibility but a spiritual one. By promoting good health and well-being, we honor God and enable ourselves to serve Him more effectively. This includes adopting healthy lifestyles, seeking medical care when needed, and supporting others in their health journeys.
Second, the Church has a responsibility to promote Good Health and Well-being.
The SDG of Good Health and Well-being calls us to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. This goal challenges us to address health disparities and provide access to quality health care, nutrition, and mental health services. The church can play a vital role in this mission by offering support, education, and resources to its members and the community.
Central Philippine University, through its health programs and community outreach, is already contributing significantly to this goal. Our churches can complement these efforts by organizing health camps, providing support groups, and advocating for better health policies. By working together, we can create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and productive life.
Third, Good Health and Well-being include spiritual and emotional well-being.
Good health extends beyond the physical; it encompasses spiritual and emotional well-being as well. 3 John 1:2 reflects this holistic view of health, reminding us that our spiritual and emotional states are interconnected with our physical health. Stress, anxiety, and emotional turmoil can take a toll on our bodies, just as physical illness can impact our mental and spiritual health.
The church can be a source of spiritual nourishment and emotional support, helping individuals find peace and healing through prayer, counseling, and community. By fostering a supportive and caring environment, we can help alleviate the burdens that many carry and promote overall well-being. Encouraging practices such as meditation, mindfulness, and spiritual retreats can also enhance our collective health.
As we reflect on 3 John 1:2 and the goal of Good Health and Well-being, let us commit ourselves to nurturing all aspects of our health – physical, spiritual, and emotional. Let us work together as a community to support and uplift one another, creating an environment where everyone can thrive. | NWI
