Solid waste management compliant LGUs known

Twelve cities and towns in Negros Occidental are finalists in this year’s provincial search for Best LGUs Compliant with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

The finalists in the city category are Bago, Cadiz, Escalante, Sagay, San Carlos, and Sipalay, as well as Calatrava, Candoni, E.B. Magalona, Manapla, Murcia, and Pulupandan in the municipality level.

Winners in both categories will receive P20,000 – champion, first place – P15,000, second place – P10,000, and third place – P7,000; plaques will be given to the 5th and 6th placers, a Capitol press release said Dec. 11.

Individual awards will also be given to SWM (solid waste management) focal persons of Negros Occidental, such as Best Focal Person (FP) in implementing SWM innovations, Best FP in implementing effective management of central MRF (materials recovery facility), Best FP in implementing IEC on SWM, Best FP in implementing effective enforcement program, and Most Active SWM FP.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Negros Occidental and the Provincial Environment Management Office (PEMO) led the final deliberations of the top six cities and municipalities, at the TLDC and HOD conference rooms at the Capitol in Bacolod City Dec. 6 and 7.

The CENRO/MENRO or the SWM Focal Person of the top six LGUs presented reports on initiatives and compliance with RA 9003 during the final deliberations attended by the PEMO SWM Team, led by Dr. Eriberto Madalag, Sheila Joan Bautista, Ria Dada, and Rodolfo Sapalo Jr., the EMB-DENR Negros Occidental Team of Engr. Victor Thomas Ureta, and the Kapitolyo Solid Waste Management Educators.

Announcement of winners will be on Dec. 15 during the 4th Quarter PSWM Board Meeting at the HOD Conference Room, while the official awarding will be held next month. ||
