Eco-friendly schools recognized

The San Carlos City Environment Management Office (CEMO) awarded the winners of the search for Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools year 8, at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Park Marina Dec. 1.

Vice Mayor Christopher Paul Carmona, Councilor Victoriana Cabili – chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Education, Arts, and Culture, and search evaluator, City Planning and Development Coordinator’s Office Zoning Officer III Engr. Roeder Amigable led in the awarding of the 49 schools that participated in the search.

Winners of Category A included the Balabag Elementary School as champion, which received a 14-inch laptop and an Epson printer; Codcod ES, the first runner-up, took home a 14-inch laptop.

The Mag-amihan ES and Medina Integrated School were the champion and first runner-up in Category B, and received a 14-inch laptop and a 50-inch Smart TV, respectively.

Category C winners were Julio Ledesma National High School, champion, and Bagonbon National High School, 1st runner-up.

Other participating elementary and high schools, which did not make it to the top spots, also received either a refrigerator, 3-in-1 printer, hot and cold water dispenser, and 40-inch Smart TV.

These schools include the Pinamantawan, Gigalaman, Quezon, Andres Bonifacio Central, Guadalupe Integrated, Bairan, San Juan, Marago-os, San Carlos Milling Company Inc., Binone, Napudlan, Nataban Integrated, Lina Dela Viña Valmayor Integrated, Mag-Amihan, Medina Integrated, Ansulag, Katiclan, Greenville, Mabato, Cabagtasan, Lagha, Lamesa Integrated, Pano-olan, Tuburan, Nabataan, Hunob, Igmamatay, Habuyo, School of the Future, Camaniangan, Don Juan, and Natuyay, all in Category A; and Codcod, Pagbatangan, Katingal-an, Cabunao, Iliranan Integrated, Florentina Ledesma, Ermita, San Jose, Quezon National, Congressman Vicente Gustilo Sr. Memorial, Ramon Magsaysay, and Sipaway, in Category B.

CEMO Integrated Waste Management/Pollution Control Division head, Engr. Arthur Batomalaque, said in a city press release Dec. 2 that the search was aimed at raising awareness, especially among the students, on the importance of segregation and protection of the environment, which is also part of the Lifestyle Change Program of the office.

He thanked the schools for their support in this advocacy.

San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo also made a quick appearance in the event.

The search focused on the environmental-related aspects of a school’s policy, environmental dimensions of school operations, environment-related features of the school curriculum, presence of vibrant eco-organizations on campus, presence of environmental partners and linkages in various programs, and projects and activities and programs on COVID-19 health protocols.

Documents were assessed in Dec. 2022, while onsite validation was conducted from March to April 2023. ||
